Sacrament Of Anointing Of The Sick
St. James in his letter says, “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray and anoint with oil in the name of the Lord and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5: 14-15)
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and physical strength during a serious illness, as well as near the time of death. This sacrament offers peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that are associated with disease, illness and dying.
Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used by a priest on the forehead and hands of the person receiving the sacrament. Through the imposition of hands, the priest calls down the Holy Spirit upon the person to grant spiritual aid and strength and seeks the healing power of God.
People of all ages can receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Anointing of the Sick is encouraged for anyone that is in danger of death, immediately before a serious operation, or for those struggling with a serious illness. The sacrament can be repeated to a person if their condition worsens or a new serious condition develops.
